Who we are for?
At Guisborough Community Heritage Group, we believe that every landscape has a story to tell. By stopping and looking closely at the small details, we begin to see the bigger picture, uncovering the forgotten history, people and places that have shaped our local countryside over hundreds of years.
Through research, interpretation and community involvement, we hope to inspire others to slow down, look a little closer, and discover the hidden heritage that surrounds them.
Who We Are
We are a volunteer-led group with a shared interest in the history, landscape and stories of Guisborough, Hutton Lowcross and the surrounding woodland.
Our aim is to research, preserve and share the area’s rich heritage in ways that are welcoming, accessible and enjoyable for everyone, whether you’re a long-time resident, a visitor or simply curious about the place you’re walking through.
What We Do
Our work includes:
- Researching local history, archaeology and landscape features.
- Creating heritage walking routes and trail guides.
- Producing interpretation for walks, exhibitions and information boards.
- Working with partner organisations, including Forestry England and local councils.
- Recording and sharing local memories, photographs and stories.
- Encouraging people to explore, understand and enjoy the landscape around them.
Why We Do It
Every year, thousands of people enjoy walking through Guisborough Forest and the surrounding countryside. Many pass fascinating historical features without ever realising they’re there. Our aim is to help people discover these hidden stories, encouraging a deeper appreciation of both the landscape and the community that has shaped it over the centuries.
Our Approach
We believe that heritage isn’t found only in grand buildings or famous landmarks.
Sometimes the most fascinating stories are hidden in a forgotten path, an old boundary stone, the remains of a railway station, or the marks left by medieval farmers centuries ago.
By connecting these small discoveries, we begin to understand the bigger story of the landscape.
